The 3 things you MUST know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In your Fuel

All over Greater Manchester we have noticed increasingly more instances of AdBlue contamination when a driver has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is to some extent a result of drivers not understanding the way to use it (please note: it is in actual fact not a fuel additive), and to some extent because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are often directly close to each other on the automobile.

Now, what exactly is the problem with having AdBlue in your diesel car?

Because AdBlue is primarily deionised water, it is just like putting water in to your tank. Diesel and water don't blend at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water will never work. In addition to this, the urea is fairly corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystalising, blocking injectors and filters. If perhaps you put AdBlue into the fuel tank drain it as quickly as possible. And obviously take care not to crank the motor - not even to relocate it into a parking place. If perhaps you have started the vehicle you would in all probability have to have the entire fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed out.

Should you end up in this situation don’t fret or panic! Call us, the UK’s Number one fuel contamination company. Our engineers possess the technical know-how and working experience to have you back on the road quickly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Marine Fuel Drains

If it turns out you've got the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most commonly water contamination or degraded fuel) in a boat we will help remove it. Providing the boat is either dry-docked, or parked near to a car parking bay we can gain access to the storage tanks and drain out the contaminated fuel. We've performed many fuel drains at piers and boatyards across the country.

I had enjoyed a wonderful day hiking on my off day and was feeling satisfied the next working day as I was en route to help a young couple who were vacationing in Dunham Town. They'd stopped after inserting diesel into their matte black Hyundai Sonata, and were close to half an hour's drive away. I turned up at their position and smiled as I listened to the gal chastising her husband for being so silly. "Precisely how could you actually be able to put the wrong fuel in the vehicle?" she said to him. I attempted to clarify that this kind of thing comes to pass on a regular basis in Greater Manchester and that it is nothing at all to worry about, however he in spite of everything had an earful. Unfortunate lad. At any rate, I drained out the polluted fuel, flushed the fuel system and gave it some right fuel. Watching as they drove away I waved good-bye and wondered what my wife would tell me if I made the very same mistake... I'd under no circumstances live it down!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
